Los Túneles, Galapagos: Snorkeling and Trip Planning
Understand the outing before building your Isabela stay around it.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Los Túneles, Galapagos, is a marine excursion reached from Puerto Villamil on Isabela. Its lava formations and snorkeling make it a possible highlight of a hotel-based trip, but it is a guided boat outing rather than a beach you walk to. Plan it on a full day during your Isabela stay, explain your swimming confidence, and confirm the route, equipment and weather alternatives before booking.
Where are Los Túneles and which island should you stay on?
Los Túneles is associated with the Cabo Rosa coastal area of southern Isabela. Puerto Villamil is the practical hotel base for the proposed excursion in our land-based routes. A visitor staying in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz should first consider the additional island crossing and hotel nights, rather than assume this is a routine departure from the same town.
The attraction is the combination of water and lava formations. It is not the same experience as walking through a dry lava tunnel in the Santa Cruz highlands. If your priority is snorkeling, say so when you inquire: the exact marine stops and time in the water need to be confirmed for the excursion available on your dates.
What does a Los Túneles excursion involve?
Think of the outing in three parts: the boat journey, the permitted visitor route and the snorkeling arrangements. A description that only lists animals tells you very little about how the day will feel. Ask about boarding, time aboard, where you enter the water, the number of snorkeling sessions and what happens if you prefer to stay on the boat.
We do not publish a fixed departure time, duration or sequence as a universal rule. These details belong to the operator and route actually confirmed in your proposal. Leave enough space in the day for the complete outing and the return to town; avoid attaching another prepaid activity to a guessed finishing time.
| Part of the day | Ask before confirming |
|---|---|
| Departure | Where do we meet, and is the transfer from our hotel included? |
| Boat journey | What is the expected duration and what could change it? |
| Visitor route | Which stops are planned, and are there any walking sections? |
| Snorkeling | How do we enter and leave the water, and what ability is required? |
| Return | How much flexibility should we leave before another activity? |
Is Los Túneles suitable for your swimming experience?
A sheltered-looking snorkeling area does not guarantee an easy journey to reach it or suitable conditions for every swimmer. Tell the planner if you are new to snorkeling, uneasy away from shore or traveling with children. Describe each person’s confidence separately. The excursion must work for the least comfortable participant, not just the keenest swimmer.
Ask the operator about supervision, flotation equipment, water entry and the option to end a session early. A life jacket or a calm photograph is not a substitute for that discussion. If a member of your party does not want to swim, establish what they can do during the outing and whether a different Isabela day would be more enjoyable.
Wildlife and the lava landscape
Choose Los Túneles for its setting and the chance to observe wildlife, rather than a checklist of guaranteed sightings. Turtles, rays and other marine animals feature in descriptions of the excursion, but their presence, visibility and behavior vary. Ask a guide what has recently been observed without treating a recent sighting as a promise.
The National Park has also documented work to protect blue-footed booby nesting areas at this visitor site. Follow the marked route and the guide’s instructions, and do not approach a nest or move around an animal to improve a photograph. In the water, avoid touching, pursuing or feeding wildlife. A quieter encounter is both more responsible and more rewarding.
Equipment, inclusions and the real cost
Check the mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit separately. Confirm sizes before the trip, especially for children, and ask whether wetsuits or other equipment involve rental charges. Include a dry change of clothes, sun protection and a way to protect personal belongings during the boat journey. Follow current biosecurity instructions for anything you bring to the islands.
When Los Túneles is part of a multi-day proposal, compare the whole service description: excursion, transfers, guide, equipment and any food provided. Do not compare an excursion-only advertisement with a package that includes hotel nights and island transport. GLBT confirms the actual services and total price in your quote rather than presenting an unverified standalone excursion rate.
How to fit Los Túneles into seven or eight days
Our seven-day outline puts three nights on Isabela between Santa Cruz stays. Los Túneles is proposed for a full day after arrival, with another day for Sierra Negra or a gentler alternative. The eight-day outline uses a similar Isabela stay and adds San Cristóbal earlier in the journey.
If Los Túneles is your main reason for visiting Isabela, mention that at the beginning of the inquiry. We can discuss the order of activities and realistic alternatives if access or sea conditions prevent the intended outing. No itinerary can guarantee that a weather-dependent excursion will operate; the useful question is how the whole stay would still work for you.
Sources and planning notes
Island facts and visitor guidance are checked against the sources below. Suggested day allocations are our planning recommendations; the linked GLBT itineraries describe our proposed routes. Access, services and the final price are confirmed in your personal quote.
Before you decide
Can I walk to Los Túneles from Puerto Villamil?
No. The excursion discussed here is a boat outing from Isabela. It should be arranged with the appropriate authorized operator and guide, with the meeting point and any hotel transfer confirmed.
Are Los Túneles and Cabo Rosa the same search destination?
Los Túneles is commonly described as the Cabo Rosa tunnels area on southern Isabela. Ask the operator for the specific visitor route and snorkeling stops rather than relying on the name alone.
Do I need a diving certification for the snorkeling outing?
A snorkeling outing is different from scuba diving. Discuss swimming ability and the operator’s participation requirements; do not book a dive product when you intend to snorkel.
Can Los Túneles be guaranteed in my package?
It can be proposed and its availability checked, but access and operation depend on conditions. Your quote should state the intended excursion and explain how changes or alternatives are handled.
