Isabela Island, Galapagos: What to Do and How Long to Stay
Give the island enough time for a boat outing, a volcanic landscape and an unhurried evening ashore.

THE SHORT ANSWER
For a land-based visit to Isabela Island, Galapagos, stay in Puerto Villamil and choose your main excursions before arranging the crossings. Three nights is a useful starting point for Los Túneles, a Sierra Negra hike or a gentler alternative, and some coastal time. This is a suggested pace, not a minimum stay. Our seven-day route combines Isabela with Santa Cruz; the eight-day route adds San Cristóbal.
Puerto Villamil: the base for a land-based visit
Puerto Villamil is the town on Isabela’s southern coast where a hotel-based stay takes shape. It is the relevant base when you are comparing beach time, local outings and excursions such as Los Túneles. Isabela is a large island: a place marked elsewhere on its coastline is not automatically accessible from town on a day trip.
Keep that distinction in mind when browsing wildlife photographs. A cruise itinerary visiting western Isabela and a hotel stay in Puerto Villamil offer different access. Start with the experiences reachable from your chosen base, then decide whether the trip you want is a land-based journey or requires a different type of voyage.
Things to do in Isabela: choose a balanced mix
A useful Isabela stay pairs one priority marine outing with one land day. Los Túneles adds a boat journey and snorkeling around a lava landscape. Sierra Negra is a walking day with a very different physical demand. Trying to fit both around a same-day arrival and departure leaves little flexibility.
Puerto Villamil’s coast, nearby lagoons and the tortoise-breeding center give you options for a less intensive day. Ask about the current access arrangements for the places you select. A visit to Las Tintoreras is another excursion to discuss, rather than something to assume is included because it is close to town.
| Experience | Why consider it | Planning decision |
|---|---|---|
| Los Túneles | Lava scenery and a guided marine outing | Reserve a day with enough margin and describe your swimming experience. |
| Sierra Negra | Volcanic landscapes and an extended walk | Check the actual walking route and choose a gentler alternative if needed. |
| Puerto Villamil and nearby visitor sites | Coastal time and a change of pace | Fit visits around opening conditions, energy and the day’s weather. |
| Las Tintoreras | An additional coastal and wildlife excursion | Compare it with your other outings before adding another boat day. |
How many nights should you spend on Isabela?
We use three nights on Isabela in both our seven- and eight-day suggested routes. That creates two full days between the arrival and departure days. The important number is usable time, not simply the number of dates that mention Isabela on a schedule.
Two nights may suit a trip built around one main excursion, but the crossing schedule and available departures need to work together. Four or more nights can give you a slower rhythm or another outing. Add the time because you want a different experience or more flexibility, rather than filling every extra morning with a booking.
| Day | Suggested focus | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Cross from Santa Cruz, settle in, enjoy Puerto Villamil | Do not treat the remaining afternoon as a guaranteed excursion slot. |
| First full day | Los Túneles, subject to availability and conditions | The operator confirms the route and equipment. |
| Second full day | Sierra Negra or a gentler island day | Choose the day around your interests and walking ability. |
| Departure | Return to Santa Cruz | Protect the connection with your later flight. |
Getting to Isabela and planning the return
In our suggested land-based itineraries, the connection to Isabela is a passenger-boat crossing from Santa Cruz. This is transport between hotel bases, not the same thing as an excursion boat visiting a protected site. Include check-in, boarding, luggage and the transfer to your next hotel when you assess how much of the day remains.
If your flight leaves from Baltra, we recommend returning to Santa Cruz the previous day. That is the arrangement in our published seven- and eight-day outlines. It reduces the number of separate connections on flight day, although no travel arrangement removes every possibility of disruption. Confirm flight times and island order together before purchasing tickets.
Choose accommodation around the whole day
When comparing hotels in Puerto Villamil, look beyond the room photograph. Ask how you reach excursion meeting points, whether you can comfortably walk to dinner, and what room arrangements work for your group. A waterfront location, a quieter street and a specific room configuration are different requests; put your priorities in order.
Tell us about practical access needs before a hotel is selected. Boat boarding, unpaved surfaces and a hotel’s stairs are separate issues, so a comfortable room alone does not make the whole route suitable. Your proposal should identify the hotel, room type and included transfers, with any alternative arrangements priced clearly.
Isabela with Santa Cruz, or with three island bases?
Choose the seven-day outline if your priorities are Santa Cruz and Isabela, including a proposed offshore day trip and Los Túneles. Choose the eight-day outline if San Cristóbal and a proposed Kicker Rock excursion matter enough to justify another base and additional crossings. More islands add variety; they also use travel time.
For a slower holiday, extending the route can be more useful than squeezing extra activities into the same number of nights. Send your available dates, preferred pace and two or three essential experiences. That lets us shape a realistic journey and confirm which services can be arranged.

Before you decide
Can I visit Isabela without a cruise?
Yes. A stay in Puerto Villamil can combine hotel nights, local exploration and guided excursions. It does not provide the same access as a cruise around the western coast, so check the departure point of each place you want to visit.
Are three nights enough for Isabela?
Three nights can allow two full days for a main marine outing and a land day, with arrival and departure kept separate. The right stay depends on crossing times, excursion availability and how much free time you want.
Is Sierra Negra compulsory in a land-based itinerary?
No. In our suggested routes it can be replaced with a gentler island day. Describe your walking preferences and ask how the change affects services and price before confirming.
Can I leave Isabela on the morning of a flight from Baltra?
Our seven- and eight-day outlines return to Santa Cruz the day before the flight. We recommend that arrangement instead of depending on an inter-island crossing followed by the full Baltra transfer on the same morning.
