Which island base fits your plans?

These are three different places to sleep and organize excursions, not interchangeable versions of the same destination. The following comparison focuses on choosing a base for a multi-day trip rather than ranking hotels by stars.

Santa Cruz: a useful starting point for a shorter stay

Puerto Ayora is the town base for our five-day Galapagos land tour. That outline leaves you in one hotel base while discussing highland wildlife, coastal time and an available guided boat excursion.

Before choosing a hotel, ask how you will reach each pickup point. A central location may suit travelers who value simple evening arrangements. A more separate setting may suit those who expect to spend more time at the property, provided the transfers are clear.

Our recommendation for a short visit is to compare the full experience of unpacking once against the time required for an additional island. Compare Santa Cruz activities and day trips, and ask about the availability of your priority excursion before fixing the room reservation.

San Cristóbal: decide where it belongs in your route

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the main town on San Cristóbal. A mainland airport on the same island makes it a possible arrival or departure base. Our suggested eight-day journey starts here before continuing to Santa Cruz and Isabela; the final order is adjusted around confirmed connections.

When comparing accommodation, tell us whether your priority is being near the waterfront, having a quieter room or keeping transfers straightforward. “Sea view” and “easy access” are different features. Request details of stairs, room location and the route from the vehicle drop-off if those affect your comfort.

Santa Cruz vs San Cristóbal: which base should you choose?

For the one-base, five-day outline on this website, start with Santa Cruz. If San Cristóbal coastal activities or Kicker Rock are priorities, discuss a stay on San Cristóbal and flights through its airport. Compare the excursions you want before choosing between the two; reaching one island does not give you immediate access to the other.

Santa Cruz versus San Cristóbal is best treated as a route decision. If you already have flights, share the airport names and dates. If you have not booked them, use our Baltra and San Cristóbal airport comparison alongside the proposed island order.

Isabela: give the additional stay enough room

Puerto Villamil is the town base on Isabela. In our seven-day Santa Cruz and Isabela outline, it provides a change of island and time to discuss a marine experience and volcanic scenery.

Before adding Isabela, decide how many usable days remain after arrival, island changes and departure. If a transfer consumes the middle of a day, do not also count that day as a full excursion day. An extra night can be more useful than a long list of activities squeezed around the move.

Confirm your last overnight stay before booking the flight home. The National Park’s inter-island transport guidance provides context for passenger-boat travel, but your actual connection needs to be checked for your dates. Do not assume a same-day boat-to-flight connection works.

Town convenience or a quieter hotel setting?

The right comparison is the room and its location within your route. An attractive waterfront photograph alone does not establish quietness, accessible entry or a sea view from your allocated room.

What to compare beyond a hotel photograph

Send us the features you care about rather than relying only on “standard,” “superior” or “luxury.” Categories are useful shorthand, but the room and location are what you will experience.

• Room arrangement: double or twin beds, children’s sleeping arrangements and whether separate rooms need to connect.
• Daily access: how you get to breakfast, excursion pickups, restaurants and your room with luggage.
• Comfort: air conditioning, private bathroom, noise preferences and any facilities you specifically want confirmed.
• Time at the hotel: a pool or terrace may matter more on a relaxed itinerary than on one with frequent full-day outings.
• Price basis: per room or per person, number of nights and exactly which meals and transfers are included.

Bring the stays together before choosing a package
